Calm, Secluded, Yet Close to the Action
I first discovered the North Kaanapali area by accident. Like many tourists my first pick was the main Kaanapali area with the big resorts and big named restaurants. I booked a hotel thinking it was on the strip only to find out it was north of Black Rock.
Imagine my surprise when I found fewer tourists, less crowded beaches, a touch less commercialism and a bit more aloha. I've never looked back and to this day it's my favorite area to stay on Maui.

Royal Lahaina Resort
2780 Kekaa Drive, Lahaina, HI 96761 | (808) 661-3611
old school and understated, newly remodeled $$$ - $$$$
The Royal Lahaina Resort is what a big resort on Maui was like 30 years ago, and that's not a bad thing. The hotel has an authentic Hawaiian vibe to it, the tower rooms are updated and the cottages are in the process. Sure, you don't get swim up bars and the lobby won't make you start snapping instagrams but you do get an affordable room on a lovely beach that is significantly less crowded than the one just a mile south.
Ocean view rooms are about the same price as a parking lot view at the big resorts and the partial ocean views are way better than than sliver of blue you get at other hotels. Even the non-ocean rooms face a beautiful golf course and the mountains, not too shabby. There's a walk up bar near the beach, a decent restaurant on site, shuttles to Whalers Village, and a family budget friendly luau that ranks with some of the best. There's a real laid back feel to this place, a sharp contrast to the hyper activity levels at the big name resorts.
It's not fancy like a spa resort but the updated rooms have a contemporary elegance and the updated and remodeled cottages are a spectacular setting for a special vacation. TIP: If you opt for a low end room, avoid anything on the 3rd or 4th floor as they overlook the rooftops and if you go with a cottage make sure it was recently updated as the old ones are old indeed.
Outrigger Maui Eldorado
2661 Kekaa Drive, Lahaina, HI 96761 | (808) 661-0021
condo vacation living, walk to main kaanapali $$$
It's all about location on Maui and the Outrigger Maui Kaanapali Eldorado is just north of the gigantic Sheraton, separated only by the Black Rock point and a golf course. This is budget Maui territory and with any condo rental facility the room you get depends greatly on its owner so be picky and don't be afraid to walk away and ask for a new room if the one they bring you to does not live up to your standards.
Eldorado is a good "home base" for a Maui vacation but you should know that actual buildings are not right on the water. They're close but do require a walk across the golf course. Once there the hotel rents cabanas on the beach and the beach is a good one. Just take the short hike to the "other side" and you'll see thousands of kids snorkeling. Quick, get back to your beach and don't breath a word to the crowds how nice it is where you are. BBQ's, kitchens, washer and dryer, this is a perfect spot for a family vacation where you plan to be out and about all day and the resort, while nice, isn't supposed to be your main attraction. Peaceful, quiet, it's like having your own home on Maui.
Westin Ocean Resort Villas
6 Kai Ala Drive, Lahaina, HI 96761 | (808) 667-3200
multiple pools, Spa, luxurious suites, excellent location $$$$$
Not to be confused with the popular Westin on the main Kaanapali strip, this Westin is a "ownership" resort that also allows non-owners to rent out their rooms and suites. The grounds are first class and the pool outstanding, just steps away from a typically uncrowded beach. The location is perfect, just perfect, situated on a typically uncrowded beach that would make those on the "strip" jealous. Rooms have kitchenettes in them and are stocked with plenty of cooking and BBQ supplies as well as extra sheets and towels and the gas grills outside are just begging you to use them.
Rooms are updated and modern - be choosy when checking in as room quality varies widely due to the size of the complex. The studios don't have a real lanai so go one or two bedroom if you want to be able to step outside. Shuttles to all of the main attractions in the area including popular Whalers Village and Lahaina and walking distance to Dukes Beach House, a popular Maui destination restaurant.
Honua Kai Resort and Spa
130 Kai Malina Parkway, Lahaina, HI 96761 | (808) 622-2800
New Luxurious suites with full kitchens $$$$$
If hotels were cars then the Marriott would be a Toyota, nice and dependable. The Ritz Carlton would be a Bentley, extravagant and braggy. The Honua Kai Resort and Spa would be a Lexus, top notch luxury but understated and restrained. If you like the good things in life but still want your resort to reflect the values of island life then this is your place.
Surrounded by lush landscaping and a plethora of pools, waterfalls and water features, you won't be disappointed by the surroundings and location. Inside the rooms are modern and contemporary and feature studios and one to three bedroom suites, all with full sized kitchens with full size stainless steel appliances. OK, you probably figured out that this is more of a condo complex than a hotel but the rooms you rent are maintained by the hotel so you don't need to worry about getting a throwback 80's room like you do with some condo rentals. Dukes Beach House Maui, owned by the same people who own Hula Grill, Kimo's and Leilani's, is right on the property so there's no need to leave the resort to get some great aloha dining. Top notch, luxurious, and off the beaten path.
